Tree Demon

Description: These creatures are not actually dinosaurs, but an evolved pterosaur closely related to the dimorphodon. The Tree Demon’s bodies are svelte and muscular, though it seems slender and fragile. Its chest is deep and wide, it’s waist narrow. Tree Demon’s vary from 5.3 to 6 feet in length, excluding the 4 to 5.5 foot prehensile tail, and stands about 3 to 4 feet at the shoulder. The Tree Demon’s body is mostly covered with a thin feather-like down that resembles hair, except for the head, feet, and end of the tail, which are scaled. Its strong jaw is perfect for plucking up small animals and swallowing them whole. The Tree Demon’s long taloned claws allow it to cling to the trees, as wells as using it for hunting and defense. The ‘wings’ are not functional, but only allow it to glide. Males have a plumage of feathers atop their head, often brightly colored whereas the females do not.

Habitat: Tree Demons inhabit the jungle areas of Skull Island. It uses its ‘wings’ to glide from tree to tree and rarely touches the ground.

Prey: Tree Demons feed mostly on insects, mammals, and birds smaller then itself. It will occasionally lower itself from the safety of the trees to devour carrion of larger animals and has been known to take out a young Raptor, though this is rare. It seems, however, to seek out the human natives of Skull Island, preferring human prey. It will stalk it’s prey by gliding silently from tree to tree, and will use it’s prehensile tail to hang from a tree branch so when the unsuspecting human passes by it will quickly bite the unlucky soul’s head and twist it’s body, snapping the neck, and sometimes decapitating the victim. Hence the reason the natives believe this creature to be more then an animal, but a demon.

Predators: The Tree Demon are food to many species of larger animals on Skull Island. V-Rexes and Raptors will not hesitate to hunt down Tree Demons. Kong especially enjoys feeding on these creatures, often pulling as many as a dozen down to feed upon. Not only do they serve as food, but Kong seems to enjoy watching them struggle before he feeds on them.

Evolution: Tree Demons are evolved dimorphodons, small pterosaurs that somehow survived on Skull Island since the Jurassic era. As Skull Island drifted further away from the continents, the dimorphodons needed to stay closer to the island for food, looking inland instead of to the ocean. As its body grew larger, its 4 ft wingspan did not since it no longer needed to make long flights out to sea. Its arms and fingers grew longer to help it grasp onto trees upon landing and small prey. No longer feeding on fish, its jaw grew smaller; it’s teeth longer and surated to rend meat and bone. It still shallows whole when it can and therefore will often ingest bark or rocks to help digest it’s food. They move more comfortably, though slowly, on the ground with extended arms and legs, but are easy prey for faster moving predators. It is most graceful in the air while gliding from tree to tree. Its prehensile tail can be used to help guide it’s flights, but is more useful helping it climb the large trees of Skull Island.
